History of Education Connection How did Education Connection get started? 1 school with 45 volunteers (2010-2011) 93 schools with 1246 volunteers (2018-19) HOW ARE LITERACY PARTNERS FOUND? • Volunteers are from faith-based and community organizations and businesses How are literacy partners trained? • By Education Connection Core Teams in partnership with Instructional Services within each school District

  10. Literacy Partner Process 1 Volunteer + 30 minutes + 2 Students = Changing the World! 30 minutes per week (approx. September – May) 2 sessions of 15 minutes of 1-on-1 reading • Child reads from a book sent by the teacher • Literacy Partner reads from a book of interest

How to Make reading time effective First, Ask the student to predict what they think the book is about • Remind them there is no right or wrong answer • Explain that making predictions is like being a detective Finding clues Then, Help them look for Clues the author leaves for the reader • Look at the book title, illustrations on the front cover, pictures inside the book this skill provides students with… • a reason to read, improved comprehension, and help them to begin to develop a love for reading

Tools for success Preview • Before you tackle any reading, discuss what you see in the book, predictions, and any questions that the student may have about the book Read • Set realistic goals for how long and how many pages you’ll be able to read during the allotted time Recall • Have the student recall and recite the highlights of what was read • Have the student summarize the story in their own words

  18. logistics To Be approved to start reading you must complete… • STEP 1 - App-garden/volunteer tracker Registration – www.education-connection.org • STEP 2 - Complete education connection training • STEP 3 - Background Check -https://education-connection.org/resources-3/ Under the General Resources Section--Click on “Background Checks Links per District” Campus orientation • You cannot schedule this until you have been approved to start reading • Once approved, Your literacy Partner coordinator (LPC) will contact you to SET this up Remember • Sign in using the education connection binder at the school office each time • Wear your lanyard and badge • Be consistent and accountable • When schedules change email the teacher and copy coordinators
