The End of the War • July 24, 1944: Soviet troops liberate first concentration camp at Majdanek. • November 22, 1944: After heavy losses in front-line infantry units serving in Northwest Europe and Italy, Ottawa authorized the dispatch of 16,000 home defence conscripts overseas. • 16 December 1944 – 25 January 1945: The Battle of the Bulge – Hitler’s last ditch effort to stop the advancing American Army. He almost succeeds but the Americans held him off in terrible conditions. • January 26, 1945 - Soviet troops liberate Auschwitz. • February 13/14, 1945 - Dresden is destroyed by a firestorm after Allied bombing raids.
The End of the War • April 21, 1945 - Soviets reach Berlin. • April 28, 1945 - Mussolini is captured and hanged by Italian citizens; Allies take Venice. • April 30, 1945 - Adolf Hitler commits suicide. • May 5, 1945: The Netherlands is finally liberated from Nazi control, with a large Canadian contribution. • May 7, 1945 - Unconditional surrender of all German forces to Allies. Its called VE Day.
