Why They Went • Population growth in the eastern states • Economic opportunity • Cheap and fertile land • Religious freedom • Manifest Destiny: the idea that expansion was for the good of the country and was the right of the country.
Music of the Pioneers • In each group of travelers there was often at least one member who could play the fiddle. Here is an example of music of the 1850s. • This is a song titled Nelly Bly by Stephen Foster. The pioneers would dance if they had the energy after a long day of walking.
