  2. Ruling TWO empires took a toll on Charles; he gave some land to his brother, Ferdinand and the majority to his son Philip II. Philip ruled Spain for 42 years. Using riches from the Americas, Spain became a formidable power. Absolute MonarchsSpanish Power Grows

  3. Absolute MonarchsSpanish Power Grows • About Philip: • Devoted all of his time to government work. • Seldom hunted or jousted. • Lived like a monk. • His home, Escorial, served as a church, residence, and tomb for royal family.

  4. Philip ruled as an absolute monarch, or a ruler with complete authority over the government and lives of the people. Divine right – authority to rule came directly from God. Absolute MonarchsSpanish Power Grows

  5. Absolute MonarchsSpanish Power Grows • Philip fought many wars to promote Spanish Catholic power. • In the 1580’s he saw Elizabeth of England as his chief Protestant enemy. (A few years earlier…he had tried to marry her!) • In 1588 he raised a huge armada, or fleet of ships, to carry a Spanish invasion to England.
