Lord of the Flies SQ answersCHAPTER TWO MRS Bly ENG 2

2. Who saw the beast/beastie/snake-like thing? The boy with the birth mark
3. Who says, again and again that there isn't a beast? Ralph
4. On Page 27, Ralph makes a two-fold "mission statement." What are the two parts? 1. We want to have fun 2. We want to be rescued
5. Why do they need a fire? To signal ships or planes in order to be rescued
6. What did the boys use to start the fire? Piggy's specs (glasses)
7. Who is the first boy to die? The boy with the mulberry birth-mark
Number 8:Who said it? PIGGY 1. (context): After the boys burn down part of the forest, Piggy grabs the conch from Ralph and tries to give his opinion of the situation. 2. (CD): "How do you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper?“ (36). 3. (CM): The character of Piggy wants things to be organized and rule-based. He is intelligent and realizes that if the boys don’t follow the rules, they won’t “act proper” (behave). Piggy believes they won’t be rescued unless the signal fire is a priority.
Number 9: Who said it? RALPH 1. (context) Ralph yells at Piggy because they can’t find all of the little’uns after the fire. 2. (CD): "I told you to. I told you to get a list of names!“ (37). 3. (CM): Ralph repeats the phase “I told you” because he’s mad that one of the little’uns is burned in the fire. This lack of organization reveals that the boys are struggling to be civilized.
Number 10: Who Said it? JACK 1. (context): Soon after the boys are stranded on the island, they realize they need order. Ralph explains that only the person who has the conch shell is allowed to talk at a meeting. 2. (CD): “We'll have rules! Lots of rules! Then when anyone breaks 'em-" (25). 3. (CM): Jack is willing to enforce the rules with violence, if needed. It is ironic that Jack says he wants to follow the rules because he is currently breaking the rule by talking in the meeting without holding the conch.
