Today’s Learning Target I can explain how and why we amend the Texas Constitution
Amending the Texas Constitution • The writers of the Texas Constitution wanted to make sure that people had power over their government • So they created a way for new laws to replace old laws • This is known as amending the constitution • This process helps to make sure our government is current, relevant, and still ran by the people.
Activity • As a group you are going to propose 1 thing you would like to change here at BBMS • After identifying what you want to change, you must provide 3 reasons why your change should be made • After our 10 minutes are up, you will present your proposed amendment to the class to see if it passes into a new law.
Change or No Change? • Those who are not presenting will be divided into 3 groups • A third of you are the Texas Senate • A third of you are the Texas House of Representatives • A Third of you are the Texas citizens • In order for an amendment to be made, the following must happen: • A 2/3 majority vote in each house of the legislative branch • A majority vote from the people • If all of these occur, then an amendment to the Texas Constitution will be made.
Requirements for an Amendment Proposal made by the people to the Texas Legislature 2/3 vote from BOTH house of representatives and senate Majority vote from the Texas citizens
AMENDING THE TEXAS CONSTITUTION • Word Bank: • 2/3 senate vote for amendment • 2/3 house vote for amendment • Majority vote from people for amendment • Amendment becomes law • Texas legislature listens to proposal • People propose amendment Instructions: Using your C-Notes complete the following diagram in regards to the process of how we amend our constitution.
