A pilot program at Bronx Community College designed to provide an accelerated pathway for non-STEM students to complete a credit-bearing math course in their first year. The program compresses two math courses into one semester and has shown higher pass rates and completion rates compared to the traditional offering.

MTH01-MTH05 Accelerated Sequence Pilot Bronx Community College Dept. of Math & Computer Science Innovative Practices in Developmental Mathematics LaGCC, CUNY April 15, 2016 Supported by a CUNY course redesign grant awarded to Karen Taylor & Suzanne Zybert Karen Taylor & EvangeliaAntonakos
Math 05 6hr/0cr Math 01 4hr/0cr • Arithmetic of signed numbers, fractions, mixed numbers and decimals • Use of percents, ratios, and proportions • Solve simple linear equations • BCC’s Elementary Algebra CEAFE Course • Non-CEAFE Topics: Word Problems Introduction of i Quadratic Formula Introduction to Parabolas
Pilot Goal • Create a path for (non-STEM) students who require two levels of math remediation to complete a credit bearing math course in their first year.
MTH 01-05 Accelerated Sequence • Sequence of two courses compressed into one semester • MTH 01 runs the first 7.5 weeks, 8 hours per week Course meets Mon-Thur, 2 hours each day • MTH 05 runs the last 7.5 weeks, 12 hours per week Course meets Mon-Thur, 3 hours each day • Total contact hours for each course is identical to traditional model; transcript reflects two distinct courses
Pedagogy • Flexibility for instructors • 3-hour class • Cohort bonding • Manageable pace • No time to forget!
Eligibility • Enter BCC in calendar year • Place into MTH 01 • Place into ENG 11 (Cohort 1, Fall 2013) not triple remediation (Cohorts 2 & 3, Fall 2014 & 2015) • Register for an additional 8 hours with a minimum of 3 of those 8 hours in a credit-bearing course
MTH 01 Pass Rate Comparison All = all entering BCC in the cohort calendar year and enrolled in MTH 01 for the first time in the Fall of the cohort year
How many semesters after initial MTH 01 enrollment does it take to pass first credit–bearing math course?
Successes & Advantages • Provides a path to complete math requirement in one year for (non-STEM) students requiring two levels of remediation • Higher pass and completion rates for accelerated courses • Zero leakage between MTH01 and MTH05 • Builds community in the classroom • Higher rates of completion of credit math class in each subsequent semester compared to traditional offering • ASAP students need to complete remediation in one year – this acceleration model supports this requirement
Difficulties • Scheduling • Automating Registration • No COA • Addition hour of class time per day for MTH05 • Ensuring students enroll in MTH23 the following Spring • Increasing awareness of program among advisors and students • Buy-in needed from VP, Chair, Fin Aid, Registrar, Scheduling: complicated • Institutional constraints: CUNYfirst COA no automatic dropping….
Future Goals • Increase the percentage of non-STEM BCC students who place into MTH01 and complete a credit bearing math course their first year. • Create 4 hour accelerated MTH05 • Add 2 hour mandatory study hall for spring semester accelerated students enrolled in MTH23 • Get administrative buy-in for a multi-year run of first year acceleration
