  5. Current Performance in the Sector • College Success rates for all qualifications have increased from 55% in 99/00 to 59% in 2000/01; and • Figures for 2001/02 show that success rates have risen a further 6 percentage points to 65%

  6. Current Performance in the Sector • Around 14% of colleges inspected in 2001/02 were found to be inadequate – this is down to 10% in 2002/03 • Two-thirds of teaching observations are graded good or outstanding

Why these curriculum areas? • Low success rates, e.g. 2001-02 Business FE provision 60%, WBL provision 38% • Poor curriculum/occupational inspection grades • Poor teaching/training observation grades • Small proportion of good or outstanding provision, e.g. 2002-03 Business FE provision 45%, WBL provision 11%

Phase 1 Curriculum Areas - work underway • Each curriculum area has developed materials • and approaches:- • Business • Differentiation: a range of materials to support • differentiated teaching and training, focusing • on Marketing and Customer Service • Construction • Health & Safety: a range of materials to • support the teaching of this often dull topic

Teaching & Learning - the picture in Business Studies - Phase 1 Differentiation in Teaching & Learning • Trial phase • focus on teaching Marketing and Customer Service • materials developed for three areas of provision: NVQ 2 & 3; GCE AS/A2/AVCE (& Nat Dip); HNC/D • CD-ROM with video clips, lesson plans, lesson materials and guidance notes • focus on process and practices • CPD support materials • trialled during May - July in 6 centres

Teaching & Learning in Business Studies - Phase 1 Differentiation in Teaching & Learning • Pilot phase • October 2003 - June 2004 • 35 centres across 9 GO regions covering SSF/SFC/GFE/Specialist colleges/WBL/ACL • to use trial materials, further develop and extend across a range of provision • monitoring and support visits by SU team • impact and effectiveness of materials and approaches used to be evaluated • refined and extended materials to be launched nationally, summer 2004

  20. Communications Strategy being jointly developed with LSC Various launches and regional events Newsletters, web sites, consultation events, advisory & focus groups… Regional networks & workshops to support sector involvement and delivery of the strategy

  21. ISSUES • Are standards improving fast enough? • How can we close the gap between the weakest and the best more quickly? • What more can the DfES and LSC do to support? • What more can colleges do to share expertise?
