  1. Reducing the environmental impact of washing with liquid detergents

  2. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Environmental impact of laundering Sustainable detergents through enzymes Taking the LCA approach Proof of concept Summary Q&A AGENDA

  3. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Environmental impact of laundering

  4. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION The main environmental issues with laundering A whopping 90 percent of the energy used by a washing machine goes to just heating the water Source: Carbon Conscious Consumer (C3) A fraction of the surfactants in the detergent is not completely removed in wastewater treatment plants and enters the environment Source: Environmental Science & Technology

  5. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Other environmental issues with laundering High water consumption to wash effectively Increased pressure on agricultural land to produce palm oil used to manufacture surfactants High water consumption to formulate liquid detergents

  6. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Sustainable detergents through enzymes

  7. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Three green wins with enzymes Surfactants Builders Reduce toxicity Save energy Surfactants Builders Others Enable compaction

  8. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Taking the LCA approach

  9. Large planes with overlap. Use: Communication of Today/Tomorrow issues. Animation: Both planes are animated. Today plane starts with slide change. Tomorrow plane with mouse click. About: The standard animation for planes are Fade for cut away planes (this slide). Spiral In in addition is standard. Only use Spiral In when the complete plane is visible. 9 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION The goal of LCA is to compare the full range of environmental damages assignable to products and services, to be able to choose the least burdensome one. guide Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) LCA is the investigation and valuation of the environmental impacts of a given product or service caused or necessitated by its existence.

  10. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Novozymes LCA facts • Novozymes uses LCA to assess and compare the environmental impact of conventional and enzyme-assisted solutions delivering the same benefit Considered environmental impact categories include: • Global warming (g CO2) • Critical Dilution Volume (CDVtox) • Acidification (g SO2) • Energy consumption (kJ) • Agricultural land use (m2.a) • Freshwater consumption (L)

  11. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION The system boundaries of this study The environment Enzyme production Detergent formulation Washing 2.7 kg laundry Wastewater treatment Heat production Chemical production Fuel extraction Processes addressed by toxicity screening Processes addressed by lifecycle assessment

  12. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Proof of concept

  13. Chart Use: This chart uses the standard Novozymes Chart settings and is a basic PowerPoint chart. Edit: The Columnsare set with a colour gradient in Effects. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION guide The trials • A liquid detergent formulated by Novozymes to reflect a typical US mid-tier product was used • Comparisons were made between: • 100% detergent • 90% surfactant + 1% multienzyme solution (protease, amylase, and mannanase) • 70% surfactant + 2.55% multienzyme solution (protease, amylase, mannanase, cellulase, and lipase) • Wash trials were conducted at 59°F (15°C) and 86°F (30°C) and were repeated four times • Performance was assessed over a broad range of enzyme- and surfactant-sensitive stains relevant to North American consumers

  14. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Better wash performance with enzymes • Conclusions • Enzymes can replace surfactants, and • Wash temperature can be reduced from 86 °F to 59 ° F without significant loss in performance Reflectance (sum of 22 stains) Wash conditions: Whirlpool top loader, 15 min (2 rinse), 6 °dH, 22 stains

  15. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Lower the impact on global warming with enzymes g CO2 eq. 86 ° F  59 °F • Conclusions • The CO2 savings obtained by reducing the wash temperature are significant Surfactants  enzymes Detergent: 70% surfactant + 2.55% multienzyme solution Data is per wash of 2.7 kg laundry

  16. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION How much energy can we save with enzymes? If all consumers in North America washed their hot/warm washes at the cold/cold – the savings would equal: 21 million barrels of oil, which is slightly more than one day's average consumption of petroleum in the US

  17. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION How much energy can we save with enzymes? If all consumers in North America washed their hot/warm washes at the cold/cold – the savings would equal: 19 fully-loaded oil tankers

  18. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION How much energy can we save with enzymes? If all consumers in North America washed their hot/warm washes at the cold/cold – the savings would equal: 7.4 million tons of CO2, which equals annual emissions from 2 million cars

  19. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Reduce aquatic toxicity with enzymes CDV (m3) • Conclusions • Toxicity is measured in CDV, which is critical dilution volume • CDV for surfactants is much higher than for enzymes, which are readily biodegradable Surfactants  enzymes 86 ° F  59 °F Detergent: 70% surfactant + 2.55% multienzyme solution Data is per wash of 2.7 kg laundry

  20. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Reduce aquatic toxicity with enzymes If all washes in the United States were done with detergents that were reformulated to have just 70% of the surfactant content and 2.55 wt% multienzyme solution CDV –Contribution to aquatic toxicity Detergent Washing machine Wastewater treatment plant River – in excess of 5 million Olympic swimming pools (which equals 140% of the annual water consumption of Arizona) worth of water would be safeguarded against toxicity from detergents in one year

  21. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Savings on emissions from degradation of detergent CO2 – Contribution to global warming CO2 – Contribution to global warming Detergent Washing machine Wastewater treatment plant River If it is considered that the detergent degrades aerobically in the wastewater treatment facility – then the savings with an enzyme reformulated detergent containing just 70% surfactant are nearly 150–300 g CO2 eq./wash, equaling the annual emissions of 2 million cars

  22. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION summary

  23. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Summary • Enzymes can replace surfactants without loss in performance • If all US consumers used enzyme reformulated detergents and washed to the cold setting, the savings would almost equal • one day's average consumption of petroleum in the US • Nearly 140% of the annual consumption of water in Arizona will be safeguarded against toxicity
