History • In 1620, a group of people left England so they could be free to practice their own religion. • The crossed the ocean in their ship, the Mayflower, and landed in the state of Massachusetts, USA
History • The people, known as Pilgrims, had a difficult year. They did not know how to cultivate the land and many people became sick and died.
History • An Indian, named Squanto, helped the pilgrims to learn to fish and to plant seeds for crops. • He also helped them form a friendship with a group of local Indians, called the Wampanoag.
History • To celebrate their first successful harvest of corn, the Governor of the pilgrims, William Bradford, organized a celebratory feast and invited the Wampanoag tribe.
