STUDIES IN PSALMS When I Choose the Proper Time Psalm 75
Background • A psalm of Asaph • Set to “Do not destroy” “Al Tashcheth” • A song, to the chief musician
Background • A psalm of judgment • The occasion not mentioned, possibly Hezekiah & Sennacherib (2 Kn. 18, Isa. 36-37) • In judgment the wicked will be destroyed and the righteous delivered.
We give thanks, O God (vs. 1) • Typical of the psalms • His name declared Jer. 10:4 • His wondrous works – Rom. 1:20, Psa. 8:1-4, 19:1-6
An appointed day (2-3) • The Lord is speaking • The proper time Acts 17:31, Eccl. 3:17 • Judging uprightly – Acts 17:31, 2 Tim. 4:8, 2 Thess. 1:5-6
An appointed day (2-3) • The earth and its inhabitants will melt2 Pet. 3:10-12 • Pillars firmly set up – He sustains all things 2 Pet. 3:5-7
Warnings against arrogance (4-6) • Who is speaking? • Do not deal boastfully - Prov. 1:22, 2 Tim. 3:2, Jas. 4:16, 1 Cor. 10:12 • Do not lift up the horn – Often associated with arrogant rulers (but at times the humble)Dan. 7:8, 11, see 23-25, Zech. 1:21, Rev. 12:3, 13:1
Warnings against arrogance (4-6) • Stiff neck (arrogance) – 2 Thess. 1:6, Rom. 2:5-11 • Exaltation does not come from the east, west or the south (the dessert –NASU). Man cannot promote Himself before God. God WILL win!
Warnings of judgment (7-9) • God is the judge – the is none other! • He puts down one and exalts another 2 Thess. 1:6-8, Rom. 2:5-11, Matt. 25:32-33
Warnings of judgment (7-9) • The wine of his wrath will be drunk by the wicked • Often a reference to God’s judgment (wine is strong and a mocker) Psa. 60:3, Isa. 51:17, Jer. 25:15-18..., Rev. 14:9-10, 16:19
Warnings of judgment (7-9) • The psalmist will sing praises to God “forever” • In deliverance, do we praise Him? • In heaven, if we are there, we WILL! Rev. 14:3, 5:11-14, etc.
The Lord will Judge (10) • The “horns” of the wicked will be cut off (they will be humbled) by God • The horns of the righteous will be exalted
Whenever the day of the Lord might be… We must be prepared! Will you stand with Him or against Him?
