Comedy Styles • Physical Comedy/Slapstick • Finding humor in the acrobatics and movements of people in unusual situations • Painful physical comedy such as falling, hitting, kicking, etc. played for humorous effect
Styles of Comedy • Verbal Comedy • Wordplay, puns, sarcasm, telling jokes - paying attention to dialogue is rewarded • Sarcasm, insults • Characters trying to talk themselves out of humorous situations
Styles of Comedy • Satire: Taking an existing person, place, news story, etc. and poking fun at them, trying to make a point with the humor (SNL, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report) • Parody: A ‘spoof’ of existing art, a movie or TV show that makes fun of another by imitating its style (Scary Movie, Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles)
Styles of Comedy • Dark Humor • Playing of a situation that would normally be very serious and finding humor in it • Is often used by a filmmaker to make a statement on the subject matter • Death, loss, inappropriate behavior
