  1. Welcome to Oak Class ‘What we learn with pleasure, we never forget’ Alfred Mercier

  2. Expectations • We would like every child to do the very best they can so that they can reach their full potential. • We want them to feel proud of their work and value what they have done and achieved. • We have high expectations with regard to the work they produce in all areas of the curriculum and also in the presentation of their work.

  3. Behaviour • Firm but fair! • Positive behaviour is always encouraged and the use of the ‘Secret Student’ exemplifies this approach. The children need to know their boundaries, what is acceptable and what is not. • The school behaviour policy is followed and the children are aware that there are consequences to negative behaviour.

  4. The New Curriculum September 2014 • Everything has now been up-levelledwith regard to the new curriculum and we need to embrace the changes.

  5. What this means for the children… • They will need to work at a higher level and pace in order to be ‘Secondary ready’ by the time they leave the schoolin Year 6. • They will be doing the new SAT’s papers in year 6 • They will need to learn their times tables up to 12 x 12 • We will work with the children to ensure they receive all the teaching and understanding they require, to become ready for year 4 and beyond.

  6. English and Maths • Year 3 is a large class and in order to meet the individual needs of the children for the Core subjects , they have been split into two groups. • Half are taught English with MrsBujniewicz and the other half are taught Maths with me, Mrs Wedlake. After break they swap around. • This ensures they get greater focus and attention and personalised learning.

  7. Mathsin Context • The children, within their maths groups, are divided up into groups according to their ability in the particular topic being covered that week. • Usually, the grouping is based on their number knowledge, however they all have different strengths so groupings are flexible. • The children are taught in their groups so again, they receive all the teaching that is pertinent to their individual needs and ensures the best progress.

  8. English and Talk For Writing “Children cannot write it if they cannot say it! ” Pie Corbett • This approach to their English work ensures the children are never at a loss as to what to write. • They Imitate, Innovate and Invent their own stories having totally immersed themselves in the text being covered. • They are constantly looking for ways to up-level their work and improve what is already a super piece of writing/poetry. • Handwriting- another high expectation!

  9. Reading • We cannot emphasise enough the importance of reading. • In order to access every other subject they need to be able to read. • They have guided reading sessions each week with a structured system to ensure they all have teacher and TA time. • There will also be opportunities for them to read independently. • We would hope that the children read at home, at least five times a week, especially if they are not confident readers yet.

  10. Reading Remember reading should be a pleasure and enjoyable. If they are not enjoying a book they are reading then it can be changed, just put a small note in their home/school reading record book. Children love being read to also!

  11. Homework • Reading - as often as possible • Times tables - these will always need practising as will their number bonds to 10/20/100 • My Maths - Currently set on a Tuesday • Weekly spellings

  12. Don’t forget though….. • The children have had an incredibly busy and hard day at school. They also need time to relax. • Any time with you is invaluable and things such as cooking, making models etc all promote good language and listening skills… as well as doing maths!! 
