Using a Thematic Approach in Language Instruction 2012 CLEF San Francisco Dr. Yu-Lan Lin Ylin@boston.k12.ma.us
End Goals • To generate EU and EQ • To design a Thematic Unit • To write a lesson plan in a Thematic Unit
Enduring Understanding • A big idea with enduring value • At the heart of a discipline • Involve “performance” • Require “un-cover” an abstract concept, a myth, a misunderstood idea • Use higher-order thinking skills • Potential for engaging students
Creating an EU • Which one(s) is an EU? • 1) A balanced diet and good eating habits directly impact on the health of a person. • 2) It is important to identify all the food names • 3) Culture and traditions influence food selection, customs and preparation.
Essential Questions • Questions lead to answer an enduring understanding • How questions • Why questions
Creating EQ • What are good eating habits, why do we need them? • How does geography affect food preparation? • How does traditions influence food selection?
A Thematic Unit • Looks like a ‘web’ • Has a thematic center • A theme branches into topics and sub-topics • Each topic becomes a lesson • A culminating activity is a summative assessment
festival habit meal culture region Food Names of food Preparation origins safety method Organic
Traditional Language Class • Limited voc, isolated grammar elements • Sequential and hierarchical • Practice skills without contexts • Little flexibility and creativity • Teacher-centered • Students rarely work cooperatively • Rigid test format
Preparation for a Lesson Plan • Visit EU and EQ of the Thematic • First: Set the end goals for lesson (measurable/observable functions) • Second: Think of assessment (acceptable evidence) • Third: Design instructional activities
Lesson Plan Template • Functional objectives • Activate previous knowledge • Introduction of new materials • Guided practice • Student-centered activities • Check for understanding/Closure/Reflection
A Culminating Activity • Visual • Audio • Multi-media/technology • Speaking • Writing • Projects • Demonstrations • Research
Performance-based Tasks • Title • Objectives • Student role • Audience • Setting • Performance-tasks • Rubrics
Analytic Rubric-Speaking • Comprehensibility • Ideas and content • Pronunciation and word choice • Syntax and accuracy • Presentation and fluency
Analytic Rubric-Writing • Comprehensibility • Ideas and content • Word choice and discourse • Syntax and accuracy • Presentation and mechanics
Reflection: Why Thematic Unit? • In terms of content: • In terms of knowledge: • In terms of skills: • In terms of assessment: • In terms of meaningful instruction:
