  1. We are in Arteixo, sailing to new horizons, discovering new practices, to improve our skills, our competences, during a life long learning for the benefit of our beloved ones: “our” “children” September 7th, 2005Civic Centre Arteixo

  2. 0# meeting EOP Arteixo EUROPE ONLINE PORTFOLIO

  3. Europe Online Portfolio • A digital way to show your competences • To your family & friends • To your tutor • To your future boss • But especially to?

  4. yourself ! Observe your competences in a wider perspective: Discover what you already achieved Determine what you have to improve Plan your route of development Determine your targets Make your well balanced choice Go for it !

  5. Hicham Aït Boushini, working on his Online Portfolioduring his internship at the Amsterdam East Council office

  6. Hicham as a mechanic

  7. Difficult? • Yes, because: • We do know what we can not perform • We have heard from others what we did not achieve • We have often heard what we did wrong • And IF we receive a compliment: • We are shy • We say “it is normal” • We are even suspicious !

  8. Rob’s “skills” • I can handle birds

  9. But, but • But I can not cut glass

  10. I never knew that: • I could sell things on a flee market

  11. About choices • Thesis: “We are capable to do many different jobs, cause we all possess many talents and many various skills” • But many students discover too late that they made the wrong choice due to: • Wrong self knowledge • Choice made, influenced by family, friends or teachers • Which lead to: • An early leave without any certificate • Unmotivated students

  12. Which causes: • A negative attitude • A loss of invested € or £ • A bad self esteem • Absence of mind & body • & • & • &

  13. Online Portfolio = “holy solution?” • Absolutely not, but: • It will help with reflection • It might increase the self estimation • It might help making choices • It could stimulate a student to be more independent • It should make them proud

  14. What elements are in OP? • Messages • The own ID-Card • Curriculum Vitae • Viewing other Portfolios • Favorite Portfolios • Competences • To-do points • Image of a Profession • Professional skills • Authorize Access from others • Feedback from others • Documents • Proves of competences • Hints “how to” • Forms for assignments

  15. “OP! Nice for us teachers! We can follow and guide our students better” • Sorry, we do understand your opinion, BUT: • It is not a “control tool” and it is not a “judging tool” • It is to give feedback, ONLY when the student wishes for it • It is a complete private matter Why private, what is the importance of it?

  16. Motivation? • Students will have a responsibility, only once it is really given to them. • They consider themselves as responsible, as they can decide 100% what to do. • Motivation will appear IF they understand the importance and need of subjects. • Students feel proud and independent if THEY may decide where to get feedback. • BUT do we – teachers – will lean back and wait? • OF COURSE……..

  17. Not, • We should explain the meaning and importance of a Portfolio • We should help them with the technical matters • We should stimulate the use • We should give them examples where they could use it for • We should emphasize the use • We should give them opportunity to work on it • We should present OP as a common daily tool • We should ask for need of feedback • & • & • &

  18. WHY EUROPE? • Of course we can use it on every individual school, or country wise • Making it an European matter we can describe more goals: • Exchange each other profiles with other (real) persons in the world • Learn from others generally • Exchange culture and knowledge with others • The use of English as a second language (Scottish have the benefit only) • And experience - you teachers – that all of us and all of our students have so many other various skills, you maybe never should have discovered

  19. Priscilla thought she liked to work as cassiere, but she turned out to be a dancer, she was approved last week

  20. Rob thought he would become a soldier, but became teacher

  21. Charelle always knew she would take care of children

  22. The things we are going to do as EOP group will be developed by us, so: • You have to get experienced with the application it self and make your own Digital Portfolio in English • We have to determine the objectives, elements, subjects for a period of 2 years starting a September 2006 • We have to make a frame of that program including evaluation moments and report moments • We have to implement the schedule in a time path, regarding all our different schedules, holidays, curriculums etc.

  23. Thanks for your attention!
