  2. Why should I care about my hair? Appearance is important, but taking care of your hair is important in your total health.

  3. What is hair made of? Keratin is a strong flexible protein found in the skin, hair, and nails. Important parts: • Hair root • Follicle • Dermis • Hair shaft • Sebaceous glands

  4. What is a split end? When hair strands are damaged, cuticle cells separated from each other and hair splits open forming the split end. Main parts of a single hair strand: • Medulla • Cortex • Cuticle Causes of split end: Hot hair dryers Curling irons Harsh chemicals Hair dyes Trimming your hair regularly gets rid of split ends

  5. How do I get rid of dandruff? Dandruff is made of flaky clumps of dead skin cells from the scalp. Causes of dandruff: Cold or very dry weather, which cause skin to flake. Treatment of dandruff: With a medicated shampoo. Severe dandruff may need to consult a dermatologist.

  6. Regular shampooing is a must to keep your hair healthy. Use conditioner to improve the appearance of dry hair. Massage your scalp gently with your fingertips when shampooing. The foundation of healthy hair is a well-balanced diet. Daily brushing keeps dirt from building up and helps distribute the natural hair oils evenly. Use a comb on wet hair instead of a brush. They can cause some health risks: • Some nail glues and removers contain toxic substances. • They can damage the natural nail if they are left in place for a long time. • Chemicals used to apply them are highly flammable. • Tools used in salons can spread bacterial and fungal infections.

  11. Cut your nails straight across top. Use lotion regularly. Keep your fingernails and toenails clean and dry. Notify your parents at the first sign of an infection, and visit your doctor.
