Revolution, Coups, and Wars • The Magna Carta was issued in 1215. • Made the king realize his subjects had certain rights. • Was an attempt to limit the Kings power. • Did not rreally work in practice during the medieval period.
Revolution, Coups, and Wars • In 1532-36 the nation broke away from control of the pope and the roman church. • Based on King Henry VIII desire to annul his marriage. • Also because of the political difference between the two.
Revolution, Coups, and Wars • Civil War between Parliamentarians and Royalists. (1642-1660) • Ended in victory for the Parliamentarian, Beheaded Charles I. • Charles II restored to the throne if he accepted an expanded role of parliament.
Glorious Revolution • King James II is overthrown by William of Orange. • William ascended the throne as William III. • Henceforth the King would be both Anglican and accountable to parliament.
Act Of Settlement and Prime Minster • Laid out the procedures to succession of the British throne. • After King George I stopped attending cabinet meetings the position of Prime Minister slowly came into play.
Great Reform Act • Despite its name it wasn’t really extensive. • Granted seats in the house of commons to cities that sprung up and took away seats from less populous cities. • Increased number of individuals entitled to vote.
Reform of House of Lords • Removed the ability of the House of Lords to veto money bills, with any other bills, the House of Commons was given powers to overrule the Lords' veto after 3 sessions.
Right to vote for all adults (1928) • Adults were given the rights to vote.
