It is promoted as contributing significantly to the local economy, with the creation of up to 10,000 permanent jobs, including 2,001 jobs going to people in the local area. The centre opened on 13 September 2011. Newham has high levels of unemployment and remains committed to ensuring residents benefit from taking advantage of opportunities created by regeneration projects across the borough.

Airport master plan • The master plan shows a phased expansion of the airport, giving the capability of handling 8 million passengers per annum by 2030 • in line with phase 1 of the master plan, London City Airport made a planning application to the London Borough of Newham in August 2007. This would allow it to increase the number of flights per year from 80,000 to 120,000 by 2010…it was declined
