Matter is classified by its chemical and physical properties.
Physical Properties • Physical Property: a condition or quality of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. • Color • Texture • Odor (smell) • Size • Shape • Any metric measurement (mass, volume, temperature, pressure, etc.)
Physical Properties (continued) • Density • Conductivity • Boiling point • Melting point • Malleability • Ductility • Magnetism
Physical Changes Subliming Vaporizing / Boiling Melting Solid Liquid Gas Condensing Freezing Depositing • Physical Change: a change in the appearance of a substance in which the identity does not change. • An easily reversed change • Changes in: shape, size, mass, volume, temperature, pressure, etc. • Changes in state of matter:
Chemical Properties • Chemical Property: a condition or quality of a substance that can be only observed when it changes into a different substance. • Reactivity • Stability • Flammability • Toxicity
Chemical Changes • Chemical Change: a change of a substance into a different substance with different properties, the identity does change. • Cannot be reversed • 5 evidences of a chemical change: • Color change • New odor (smell) • Release of energy as heat or light • Gas produced, seen as bubbles in a liquid • Formation of a precipitate (solid formed from 2 liquids), seen as “cloudiness” in a liquid.
