Course Content Course Content • Over course of two years you will complete 6 units. These will include: • five portfolios • Unit 1 – Using ICT to communicate • Unit 3 - ICT for individuals and society • Unit 9 - Working to a brief • Unit 10 – Numerical modelling using spreadsheets. • Unit 12 – Publishing • One Exam • Unit 2 – How organisations use ICT
Unit 1 Unit 1 • In Unit 1 you are expected to design and make 6 different pieces of work for a company of your choice. This company can be made up if you want. • These 6 pieces of work are as follows: • A Questionnaire • A Leaflet • A Website • A Letter • A Communication Presentation • An Information Presentation • Through completing Unit 1 you are expected to learn the following skills: • Website designing • Using graphic software • Mail Merging • Leaflet designing • Letter designing
Unit 2 Unit 2 • GCE AS Level (100/300) • GCE A Level (100/600) • The Written Examination Unit • Exam will normally be taken in May of Year 12 • Pre-release Material given out few months before exam. • Written Exam (70/100) • Pre-release Tasks (30/100) • Pre-release Material • Task 1 – Research and Note making. The notes produced are allowed to be taken into the examination to help you answer the questions. • Task 2 & 3 are worth 30/100 marks available in the unit. • Task 2 (15 marks) – Drawing a diagram that explains how information moves within the company and with outsiders during the process of organising an event. • Task 3 (15 marks) – A word-processed report for the company explaining the implications of something on the company. E.g. ICT related legislation, developments such as robotics etc.
Unit 3 Unit 3 • GCE AS Level (100/300) • GCE A Level (100/600) • The numerical investigation and research unit. • The candidate chooses the hypothetical question they wish to investigate. • This unit is marked out of 50 Collect data using complex searches Experiment with search engines Report Create a spreadsheet to analyse data. Present your results. Evaluation
Unit 9 Unit 9 • GCE AS Level (100/300) • GCE A Level (100/600) • The Teamwork Unit. • The team has a choice the briefs set by the exam board. • This unit is marked out of 50. • What will you learn? • By studying this unit you will learn: • How to improve your own performance and working relationships with others. • How to apply different techniques for planning a project. • How to practise and further develop skills used to produce a solution to a brief. • How to practise and further develop skills needed to reflect on work you have completed. • How will you be assessed? • The work you need to produce is: • A preparatory report into the current working practice (6 marks). • A project plan in response to the set brief (18 marks). • A diary or log of work completed (31 marks). • Support materials for use with the project (5 marks). • An evaluation of your performance in relation to planning the project (12 marks). • An evaluation of your performance in relation to planning the project (12 marks). • An evaluation of your performance in implementing the project (13 marks). • An evaluation of your ICT solution to the given brief (15 marks).
Unit 10 Unit 10 What is involved in this unit? This unit is a portfolio unit. This unit is all based around creating a spreadsheet system that can be reused. This year the applied ICT students based their spreadsheet system on a pizza company scenario. Identify what needs to be done to complete the unit Design your spreadsheet system Evaluate your system and how you carried out the task. UNIT 10 Make spreadsheet Create a technical guide Create a user guide Test spreadsheet
Unit 12 Unit 12 • GCE AS Level (100/300) • GCE A Level (100/600) • The Desktop publishing unit. • This unit is marked out of 50. Meet with client to discuss what is wanted and record minutes of these meetings. Design a brochure and create some drafts to clients brief and then get feedback from the client. Produce a brochure or leaflet Produce a brochure or leaflet using many different techniques. What is to be done? Give the finished copy to the client along with a letter of explanation Evaluate the solution.
Course Requirements Course Requirements • Formal Requirements • You must have achieved the minimum grades of 5 C’s at GCSE. • There must be enough room on the course for the pupil to take the subject. • Informal Requirements • You should be someone with a creative mind, • You should be able to prioritise your work and meet deadlines, • I.C.T at GCSE is not needed but would be an advantage to have some background knowledge of computers, • You should be able to adapt to different programmes on the computers, • You should not be afraid to try new software, • You should be able to work independently and as apart of a team.
