  2. Learning Goal I will be able to define dialogue and dialect and identify examples of this literary element by taking notes, synthesizing the notes into my own words, and completing a practice activity.

  4. Literary Term: Dialogue Dialogueis a conversation between or among characters in a literary work. Dialogue is usually set off by quotation marks, and a new paragraph indicates a change of speaker. EXAMPLE:“Do you want to go to the movies this weekend?” asked Jane. “No thanks. I have loads of homework to do,” I replied sullenly. Why would an author use dialogue? • to reveal character traits and relationships (indirect characterization) • To advance the action of the plot and develop the conflict • To add variety, color, and realism to narratives (stories)

  6. Literary Term: Dialect Dialect isa way of speakingthat iscommon topeople of aregion or group. The words, pronunciations, and grammar of a dialect differ from those of the standard form of a language. Why would an author use dialect? • To reveal the story’s setting, to make settings more vivid, and to add realism to narratives (stories) • to reveal character traits and relationships (indirect characterization)

  8. Practice Activity: Identifying and Analyzing Examples For each of the clips, you will answer the following questions: • How many dialects are presented in this clip? Where do they originate from? 2. How does dialect and dialogue add variety and realism to the narrative (story)? 3. What does the dialogue and dialect tell us about the characters and/or culture represented?
