  1. MSP test prep • Read the questions first – It gets your mind in the game • Read the story – then pause and think of all the things in YOUR life that relate • Then read the story again – by doing all of this you give yourself the best advantage avoid the “COLD START”

  2. February 25 MSP Test prep • If they ask for two details in an essay question give three. If they ask for 3 give 4 You’ll have one in the bank should one of the others be wrong. • Avoid vague pronouns. Identify everything by its name. • Practice NEAT hand writing -

  3. February 26 INFERENCE • a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. • synonyms:deduction, conclusion, reasoning, conjecture, speculation, guess, presumption, assumption, supposition, reckoning

  4. February 27 • Expository = Fact based genre of writing that explains, exposes, and informs. The author’s purpose with this genre is to inform and convey information.

  5. February 28 • Historical Fiction = imaginary characters set against the back drop of historical events. Our story takes place in the 1930’s in the Jim Crowe south of Mississippi.

  6. March 3 • EMAC IATED = abnormally thin or weak, esp. because of illness or a lack of food. Synonyms thin, bony, gaunt, skeletal

  7. The Mississippi state flag was positioned on top of the American flag at the Jefferson Davis School.

  8. March 4 • MALNUTRITION = lack of proper nutrition, caused by not having enough to eat, not eating enough of the right things. With so much emphasis on cotton there was not enough land for growing food. Also, Mr. Grainger wanted them to buy their food at the Wallace store.

  9. March 5 • EPISODE = an event or a group of events occurring as smaller part of a larger sequence; an incident or period considered in isolation. • synonyms = incident, exploit, adventure • The bus episode, the book stomp episode, the TJ burning episode, the Jeremy/LilianJean Episode

  10. Monday March 10 • Test on Thursday up to last Friday. Make a plot diagram of Friday’s Episode.

  11. March 6 • Plot = the sequence of events in which each event results from a previous one AND causes the next. The book stomp episode. 1. Little man’s obsession for cleanliness causes him to reject the used book. 2. Because he can read he sees the book is a discard from the white kids. 3. offended by what he reads he stomps on the book. 4. Because he is proud he takes his punishment without tears. 5. Mama pastes the paper in the book

  12. March 7 • Plot sequence of Pa’s visit episode = • 1. Ma’s letter about the burnings • 2. Pa’s visits bringing Mr. Morrison • 3. John Henry Berry’s death announced at church • 4. Neighbors discuss John Henry “they’d been after him” • 5. Mr. Avery mentions Lynching in Crawston • 6. Pa suddenly announces “We don’t shop at the Wallace Store” • 7. Neighbors silently glance around uneasily

  13. March 10 Monday • Test on Thursday up to March 7 words. Study this week. Make a plot curve for Friday’s episode.
