Easy Grammar Practice and Rules to Remember
Do Now #1Write the sentence and choose the correct word. • There is a beautiful moon out tonight, and Estelle and I are going for a stroll. Would you like to come along with (she and I OR her and me)? • Your friend doesn’t believe that you are older than (I or me). • Maybe we are not as cool as (they OR them), but I bet we are a lot happier.
Do Now #1 Explanation and Answers • Her and me • I • They • In number 1 the word “me” ends the sentence and is part of the predicate. • I number 2 and 3, there is an implied verb that follows the word – I “am” and They “are”. This means that this word is also the subject of the sentence. “Me” and “them” can only be used as a predicate.
Do Now #2Write the sentence and choose the correct word. • Does your child still (lie OR lay) down for a nap after school? • When we saw Sara openly flirting with Kayla’s boyfriend, we (could OR couldn’t) hardly believe our eyes! • You should (of OR have) brought your markers to class today.
Do Now #2 Answers and Explanations • Lie – people “lie” down; only objects “lay” • Could – “couldn’t hardly” would be a double negative and mean the opposite of the intended meaning. • Have – the word should requires a verb to follow it; “of” is a prepositional phrase. It may sound like could of when you say it, but that is only because you are speaking the contraction form: “could’ve”
Do Now #3Write the sentence and choose the correct word. • I have to spend Sunday with all my (sister-in-laws OR sisters-in-law). • What kind (of OR of a) dress are you looking for today? • Maria was excited that Estrella invited Kiara and (her OR she) to the party.
Do Now #3: Answers and Explanations • sisters-in-law: there are multiple sisters not multiple laws. “in-law” just describes the type of sisters. • Of – “a” implies that only one dress exists when in fact many dresses exist. For this reason “a” is not necessary. • Her – “her” is in the predicate of the sentence. It could have also said: She and Maria were excited to be invited to Estrella’s party. In this sentence “she” is in the subject.
