Habitat • The blue whale lives all around the world near the surface of the ocean . They sometimes live in small groups called.
Size • The blue whale can grow up to 29 meters long . It has a layer of fat (blubber) 5-30 cms thick all around its body.
Appearance • The blue whale has two flippers, a small fin on the back and a large tail . They skin is blue –grey and covered with small white-grey spots.
Food • The blue whale eats tiny sea creatures and small fish.
Young • The female gives birth to a single calf. Calves are 7-8 metres long at birth and weigh 2,722 kg. the calf drinks 230 litres of its mother ‘ s rich milk each day and puts on about 4 kilos per hour!
Interesting fact • The blue whale can make more noise than a jet plane when it breathes through its two blowholes.
Threats • Like other large whales, blue whales are threatened by environmental change including habitat loss, toxics, and climate change in the Antarctic. Blue whales can also be harmed by ship strikes and by becoming entangled in fishing gear.
