  2. famine • A time when there is so little food that many people starve

  3. gladiators • In ancient Rome, a person who fought to the death in an arena for the entertainment of the public; usually a slave

  4. monsoons • A strong, seasonal wind that blows across East Asia

  5. Oral traditions • Stories passed down through generations by word of mouth

  6. persecution • Causing injury or distress to others because of their religion, race, or political beliefs

  7. reincarnation • The rebirth of the soul in the body of another living being

  8. Stone Age • A period of time during which people made lasting tools and weapons mainly from stone; the earliest-known period of human culture

  9. migration • The movement from one place to settle in another area

  10. serf • A farm worker considered part of the manor on which he or she worked

  11. timeline • a linear representation of important events in the order in which they occurred.

  12. Medieval • Referring to the Middle Ages

  13. lord • a person who has authority, control, or power over others; a master, chief, or ruler.

  14. chivalry • The code of honorable conduct for knights

  15. currency • The kind of money used by a group or nation

  16. import • To bring in goods from a foreign country

  17. export • to ship goods to other countries or places for sale, exchange, etc

  18. inflation • An economic situation in which there is more money with less value

  19. Merit system • A system of hiring people on the basis of their abilities

  20. monopoly • The exclusive control of goods or services in a market

  21. surplus • More of a thing or product than is needed

  22. isthmus • A narrow strip of land connecting two larger groups of lands

  23. longitude • These lines run North to South but measure East to West

  24. latitude • These lines run East to West and measure North to South

  25. archipelago • A group or chain of many islands

  26. Fertile Crescent • A region in Southwest Asia; site of the world’s first civilizations

  27. terraces • Steplike ledges cut into mountains to make land suitable for farming

  28. climate • the prevailing attitudes, standards, or environmental conditions of a group, period, or place

  29. legend • a table on a map, chart, or the like, listing and explaining the symbols used

  30. border • the part or edge of a surface or area that forms its outer boundary

  33. Agora • a public market and meeting place in an ancient Greek city

  35. Slavery • condition of being owned by and forced to work for someone else

  36. Sparta • a city-state in ancient Greece

  37. Helots • in ancient Sparta, the term for slaves who were owned by the state

  38. Peloponnesian War • (431-404 B.C.) war fought between Athens and Sparta in Ancient Greece

  39. Plague • a wide spread disease

  40. Blockade • an action taken to isolate the enemy and cut off its supplies

  41. Assassinate • to murder for political reasons

  42. Alexander the Great • king of Macedonia (356-323 B.C.) conquered Persia and Egypt and invaded India

  43. Hellenistic • describing Greek history or culture after the death of Alexander the Great, including the 3 main kingdoms formed by the breakup of Alexander’s empire

  44. Barbarians • group that is considered wild or uncivilized

  45. Splendor • greatness or richness

  46. Secluded • screened or hidden from view

  47. Estimate • to form a fairly accurate opinion

  48. Revolt • a rebellion

  49. Exaggerated • to have enlarged beyond the truth, overstated

  50. Resent • to feel or express ill will or annoyance
