145 th Street Short Stories Cycle 2, Day 2
Agenda As we read, we will draw conclusions about the theme by looking at the thoughts and feelings of the main character. Do you believe in luck? Team cooperation: 100% participation
Think-Pair-Share What do you think is going to happen now that something good has happened to Jamie?
Think-Pair-Share: Theme Why do we know more about the main character than we do about anyone else in a story? How does knowing the feelings of the main character help us better understand the theme of the story? In “The Baddest Dog in Harlem,” the main character goes upstairs with the police, only to find that they had accidentally shot a kid. How did the main character feel about that? Did he learn anything? What does this tell you about a possible theme?
Listening: “The Streak” Listen to pages 64 to 66 Think aloud T-P-S: Why is Jamie unhappy that luck things keep happening to him? Do you think all the things happening to Jamie are because of luck? Why or why not? Based on Jamie’s thoughts and feelings, what do think is a possible theme for this story?
Partner reading: pgs 66-72 Why did Jamie decide to stay in his room and do absolutely nothing? How did the basketball game with Carver end? What did Jamie do? Why did Celia think Jamie would go to the dance with her? Jamie concludes “that the whole world is on a streak.” What do you think this thought tells you about a possible theme of the story? (write)
Reflection Why did Jamie believe he was on a streak? Have you ever been on a streak? What happened? Do you think that all streaks are luck? Why? Do you believe in luck? Why or why not? Vocab review Homework: read 20 minutes EVERY night with notes.
