Definition: Short Stories • condensed fictional narrative that is usually written in prose. • They normally have a small number of characters involved in a single action with one theme.
Emotional Impression Short stories are aimed at exciting a single emotional response in the reader.
Characters • Are people, and sometimes animals, who take part in the story.
Characters can be: Main Character: The most important characters. Minor Characters: all other characters.
Types: Antagonists: whatever opposing force the protagonist struggles with, such as another character, environment, or something within the protagonist Protagonist: the central character
Character Traits A quality that a character exhibits is called a character trait. This trait can be indicated by the character's statements, actions, or thoughts. Name some character traits of these two people.
Characterization: The description of qualities present in a character. There are two types of Characterization:
Direct Vs. Indirect Characterization • When an author uses adjectives to tellwhat a character is like, it is called Direct Characterization. • When an author uses verbs to showwhat a character does, it is called Indirect Characterization.
Character Development Short Stories Unit
Character Development: Flat • Flat: Embody or represent a single characteristic, trait, or idea. They are not developed. Sometimes referred to as stereotyped or stock characters. • Example: Gollum
Character Development: Round • Complex, multi-dimensional, and developed, embodying a number of qualities and traits. Usually a main character in the books you have read.
Character Development: Static • The character does not change. Supporting characters. Sidekicks. Why not make a character change? To help the non-static character stand out and illuminate how they have changed.
Character Development: Dynamic • The character changes in their insight, understanding, or values. Changes in circumstance, even physical circumstance, do not apply unless they result in some change within the character's self.
