  1. CABO Exam Prep 2011-12 Review of last year’s commonly misinterpreted exam questions

  2. It’s on the CABO website this year! (Not the BCBOA website) • The BCBOA Exam is now available on line at www.cabocanada.org. Just scroll down on the opening page to find the information about the exam. After reading the 10 points you only need to select the red BC English Exam.

  3. CABO Exam instructions • Two important notes: • 1) Only submit the exam when you have completed all 50 questions. • 2) As well, your sign-on name must be in UPPERCASE (LAST FIRST) and the password is (also UPPERCASE) BC123. • It is a requirement of National Officials Certification Program and of the BCBOA Provincial Assignment Policy that officials write the exam. You have until the end of December to complete the exam.

  4. CABO Exam WARNINGS • You only get 2 hours to write the test (a visible clock is seen at all times) • If you save and leave, the clock DOES NOT stop running. You are probably best to make sure you have at least a 90 minute window of time to write it, and it is best not to save & leave.

  5. Review Questions • GET YOUR BRAINS READY…

  6. Question 10 • A2 has control of the ball in Team A's frontcourt, when B2 taps the ball out of A2's hands and the ball rolls into A's back court. Shall the backcourt count start as soon as any Team A player touches the ball?

  7. Question 10 Answer • ANSWER: NO - Art. 28.1.1 - As this is not a throw-in, and although Team A is still in team control, the backcourt count starts when any Team A player gains player control of the ball on the court.

  8. Question 11 • Team A is awarded a throw-in with 0.00.2 displayed on the game clock. Thrower-in A2 passes the ball to airborne player A4 who catches and immediately dunks the ball into the basket. Are the officials correct in counting the basket?

  9. Question 11 Answer • ANSWER: YES - Art. 16.2.5 - With less than 0.00.3 remaining on the game clock, from a throw-in or unsuccessful free throw, a player is permitted to tap or immediately dunk the ball. It’s your job to make sure the ball is released before horn goes!

  10. Question 18 • While A1 is in the act-of-shooting, A2 and B2 commit a double foul. A1 then releases the try for goal and the ball enters the basket. Shall the basket count?

  11. Question 18 Answer • ANSWER: NO - Art. 42.2.5 - Because a teammate is involved in the foul and the ball was still in A1's hands, the ball becomes dead immediately and therefore the basket is disallowed. Team A would retain possession of the ball and awarded a throw-in at the nearest spot to the foul out of bounds with no reset on the shot clock.

  12. Question 21 • B5 fouls A5 during an unsuccessful try for goal. It is then discovered that A5 is participating as a 6th player for Team A. A5 must leave the game immediately. The officials rule that the free throws from B5's foul shall be attempted by any Team A player on the playing court at the time of the foul as designated by Coach A. Is this correct?

  13. Question 21 Answer • ANSWER: YES - Interpretations, Art. 18/19 - Statement #6. (As well, if it’s your error = no Technical foul; Team A’s error = Technical foul)

  14. Question 26 • A5's try for goal is in the air when the shot clock expires and horn sounds. The try then lodges in the basket support. Team A is entitled to the next AP arrow throw-in. Shall the AP arrow throw-in be awarded to Team A?

  15. Question 26 Answer • ANSWER: NO - Art. 29 - When the ball lodges in the support, it is not considered as striking the ring. Team A has committed a shot clock violation and the ball shall be awarded to Team B at a designated throw-in spot on the endline.

  16. Question 32 • With 1:03 remaining in the 4th period, the ball has left the hands of thrower-in A3 when B3 causes illegal contact with A5. The official calls a foul on B3. Shall the foul be ruled unsportsmanlike?

  17. Question 32 Answer • ANSWER: NO - Interpretations, Art. 36, Statement #2 - During the final 2 minutes of the game, after the ball is released by the thrower-in, any foul by a defender shall be judged on its own merits. It is not an automatic unsportsmanlike foul, unless there is excessive contact.

  18. Question 35 • Play is interrupted for an injury to A2 who is not ready to play immediately. Team B is granted a time-out. After the time-out, A2 is ready to play. Shall A2 be allowed to play at this time?

  19. Question 35 Answer • ANSWER: YES - Art. 5.6 - If an injured player recovers during the time-out, that player shall be permitted to play unless the injured player was already substituted for.

  20. Question 40 • Near Team B's basket, A2 attempts to pass to A5 but the ball is deflected by B3. The ball then strikes the ring. Shall the shot clock be reset?

  21. Question 40 Answer • ANSWER: YES - Art. 50.2.1 - The clock is reset whenever the ball strikes the ring (except on a throw-in), on a pass, shot or deflection from the player court.

  22. Question 42 • On the final or only free throw, if non-shooter A2 violates followed by defender B2, and then the shooter misses the shot (But it hits the rim), is an AP situation created?

  23. Question 42 Answer • ANSWER: NO (Really new and somewhat confusing!) Art. 43.3.3 – Only penalize the A2 violation, as it happened first, by giving Team B the ball on the free throw line extended. (Because the shot was missed; if the free throw was successful, we would ignore the A2 violation) • New interpretation - If a last attempt free throw is unsuccessful, violations by only one team shall be penalized (And we only penalize the first one, so no double violations can ever be called), unless the shooter is involved. If the defending team violates first (B2), &then the shooter violates (A1), the ball is dead as soon as A1 violates. However, we can only penalize the first violation (B2), but you cannot count a shot if the shooter violates too, so A1 would reshoothere.

  24. Question 43 • With 47 seconds remaining in the 4th period, after catching a defensive rebound, B1 commits a traveling violation near the endline in B's backcourt. Team A is then granted a time-out. Shall the Team A throw-in be administered at Team A's frontcourt throw-in line? (Top of 3 point line)

  25. Question 43 Answer • ANSWER: NO - Art. 17.2.2 - When a throw-in is awarded in the front court, the throw-in shall be administered at the nearest spot to the infraction, not the throw-in line.

  26. Question 47 • With less than 2 minutes remaining in the 4th period, B3 commits an unsportsmanlike foul on A5 who is dribbling in the back court. The shot clock shows 18 seconds. Team A is granted a time-out. Following the free throws, Team A is awarded a throw-in at the midcourt line. Shall the shot clock be reset?

  27. Question 47 Answer • ANSWER: YES (this was NO last year, so pay attention!) - Art. 29-8 – After a technical, unsportsmanlike, or disqualifying foul, a midcourt throw-in must be awarded, with a full shot clock reset. A team cannot advance the ball to the front court here!

  28. Question 48 • Dribbler A5 is advancing the ball towards the frontcourt. In an effort to go around B2, A5 now has both feet in the front court, dribbles the ball behind his back. The ball hits the back of his leg and bounces into the back court where A1 retrieves the ball. Is this a legal play?

  29. Question 48 Answer • ANSWER: YES - Art. 28.1.2 - Frontcourt status is gained by the dribbler only when both feet, as well as the ball, are directlycontacting the frontcourt.

  30. Question 50 • Near the end of a period, A4 attempts a try for goal. A4 releases the ball and then the signal sounds to end the period. After this, B3 legally deflects the ball on its upward flight. The ball then enters the basket. Shall the basket count?

  31. Question 50 Answer • ANSWER: NO - Art. 10.3 - After the horn sounds to end a period, when the ball is legally touched, the ball becomes dead immediately. So, here, the basket does not count.

  32. Bonus Question • A1 releases the ball on a try for goal. While the ball is in the air, the 24-second device sounds. After the signal sounds, B2 fouls A4. The ball then misses the ring. Shall a throw-in be awarded to Team A?

  33. Bonus Question Answer • ANSWER: NO - Art. 10.3 - A 24-second violation has occurred. (It overrides the foul here!) B2’s foul shall be disregarded unless it was technical, unsportsmanlike or disqualifying.

  34. Exam Hints • We will post what we already covered today, plus the other exam hints (Next 4 slides), on the VBOA website. Don’t say we don’t try to help or reward those that come to the meetings / check the VBOA website ;-)
