Feeding America • As part of the LEAP Program, students took part in a community service activity. • Feeding America, is a charity to end hunger in the United States. • LEAPers took a trip to Salem, VA to help at the local warehouse. • Needless to say, it was an eye-opening experience and it was a great way to serve the community.
Our duties… • The group of 40 was divided into two teams (15 in one, 25 in the other) • The team I was in consisted of the 25 students. • We (group of 25) were further divided into groups and each group consisted of three stations; I was part of the second station. • The first station emptied out the boxes containing the food and examined the physical conditions of the food containers. • The second station looked at the expiration date and saw if the food was safe for the families to eat. Most of the foods were expired but according to the chart we followed, they could be eaten up to a certain date. • The third station packaged the food containers into bigger boxes, ready to be shipped to shelters.
