  2. What is service Learning • Service-learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service, frequently youth service, throughout the community. As a teaching methodology, it falls under the philosophy of experiential education. More specifically, it integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, encourage lifelong civic engagement, and strengthen communities for the common good.

  3. This act restricts the spread of same sex marriage between states and since then Doma has restricted gay/ lesbian marriage in numerous states. Benefits of Service Learning • Increased access to the range of supports and opportunities they need to grow up healthy, caring, and responsible. • Increased sense of self-efficacy, as young people learn that they can impact real social challenges, problems, and needs. • Higher academic achievement and interest in furthering their education. • Enhanced problem-solving skills, ability to work in teams, and planning abilities. • Enhanced civic engagement attitudes, skills and behaviors.

  4. Benefits of Service Learning….. • Young people are more likely to stay engaged when they feel their participation is meaningful and they can make useful contributions. • Service-learning gives an intentional strategy for addressing goals for learning and personal development through civic engagement and community service. • Service-learning can cultivate connections between the organization, schools, higher education, and other community groups. • Service-learning can increase program staff and volunteers’ level of engagement, leadership capacity, and satisfaction with their work. • Service-learning reinforces effective youth development practices, providing young people with, among other things, appropriate structure, supportive relationships, opportunities to belong, positive social norms, opportunities for skill building; and integration of family, school, and community efforts.

  5. The Dosta Dash • The dosta dash is an annual one mile, 5k, or 10k run that is sponsored by the Valdosta Junior Service League . • I volunteered and helped direct the runners while they were running.

  7. Relay For Life • The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length

  8. Toys For Tots • Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which donates toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them . • My High School does this every year and I participate in it every year. It gives me a chance to give to children who do not have as good of a child hood as I did.

  9. What I have Learned • By doing service learning I have learned about team work and that instead of always doing things to edify yourself you should do things to help others. I t actually feels better to help someone else than to always help yourself. • Because of this service learning program I will now do some volunteering on my own not because I have to but because I want to.
