General Facts About the Fulbright Scholar Program • Established in 1946 • Sends U.S. academics and professionals overseas • Brings scholars and professionals from abroad to the U.S. • Sponsored by U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs • Administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES)
What is the “Traditional” Fulbright Program? • The original core of the Fulbright program • Over 800 awards each year for U.S. applicants • Lecturing, Research, Lecturing and Research combinations • Lengths vary from 3 to 12 months • Types vary: discipline specific awards and All Discipline awards • Discipline-specific awards based on requests from host country and institutions in each country
How To Find the Right Award for YOU • Search the online Catalog of Awards by World Area and Country: Europe • Use the Awards by Discipline index • Search the Awards Open to All Disciplines • Use the Index of Research Awards by Discipline • For non-academics use the Index of Awards Open to Professionals
Eligibility Requirements • U.S. citizenship • A Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree in your field • For professionals and artists outside academia, recognized professional standing and substantial accomplishments • Teaching experience as required by award • Limits apply to prior Fulbright Scholar grantees
Western and Southern Europe – The Countries…. • Europe, West and South includes 18 countries: Austria, Belgium/Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Spain, Turkey and United Kingdom.
Western and Southern Europe –The Offerings… • All countries, except Portugal, have all discipline awards, open to all fields. • Opportunities for research, lecturing/research and lecturing. • Awards in the social sciences and humanities are offered in nearly all countries. All academic fields and many professional fields are eligible • The region also offers broad ranging discipline specific awards in a over fifty fields including the arts, medical sciences, engineering, entrepreneurship, and journalism for early career professionals
Western and Southern Europe Offerings… • Research only opportunities are available in: • Austria- Artists in Residence • France Regional Awards • Germany – International Politics • Ireland – Business Innovation • Ireland – Engineering/Telecommunications • Portugal – Mathematics • Spain – Journalism • United Kingdom – Research awards at Cardiff University, Kings College London and Liverpool University.
Western and Southern Europe – Specialty Programs: • German International Education Administrators Program (GIEA): A group seminar on German higher education and society designed for up to 25 U.S. university, college and community college administrators whose current responsibilities have a direct relation to international exchanges, career services, alumni affairs or development and fundraising in higher education. Deadline: February 1, 2010(Link) • German Studies Seminar Program: Designed for up to 25 U.S. scholars in German Studies and disciplines related to the seminar topic that will be posted to the CIES web site soon. Applications are welcome from U.S. university, college and community college scholars. Deadline: November 1, 2009 (Link)
Western and Southern Europe – Specialty Programs: • EU Affairs Research Program Program focuses on research in a broad range of topics related to EU policy and EU-US relations, and can be located in any EU Country (Link) • Police Studies/Criminal Justice Awards Offer an opportunity to enable emerging, mid-career, or senior domestic police officers and police administrators, with traditional experience in public law enforcement, to conduct research on an aspect or problem of policing shared by U.S. and U.K. (Link)
Distinguished Chairs Program • Awards viewed as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholars Program • Offers 40 awards in 14 countries across Europe, as well as Australia, Brazil, Canada and Israel. • Awards often in the fields of American studies, American literature, American history and political science, but also in religion, law, engineering, business administration, media studies and alternative energy technology. • Complete applications by August 1, 2009

Sivachev Distinguished Chair in American History (Link) Lecture at advanced undergraduate and graduate levels in any specialization of U.S. history. • Affiliation with Moscow State University • Rank of Associate or Full Professor Required • Length of Grant: 3 – 5 months • Sweden: Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Alternative Energy Technology(Link) • Ph.D. , 5 years of lecturing and research on alternative energy and preferably rank of professor; Professionals and researchers from institutes and corporations will be considered. • Teach specialized courses, and collaborate on teaching and research at Department of Energy, Chalmers University of Technology

Special Country Program OpportunitiesSomething for Everyone! • Ireland: Offers a variety of 21 programmed awards--from art to medical sciences. A culinary arts award is open (#0284) to professionals with some teaching experience (link) • Italy: Offers 14 awards including opportunities in math and sciences, mechiatronics engineering as well as policies and tools for environmental sustainability (Link) • Netherlands: Senior professorships in American culture (#0334).
