Postmodernism • Science does not = progress • Science is not value neutral • Scientific knowledge is not universal • Science=power • Whoever controls science controls the dominant paradigm • Context is where life really is
Postmodernism • Concerned with intention and reception not content • Thinking globally and acting locally • Denies that there is a truth and a reality that is not contexted • Anti-sexist, anti-racist

Postmodernism • Critical of the modern project—science and progress are not possible or desirable • Rejects grand narrative—world views, synthetic theories • Focus of local experience and narrative
Postmodernism • Rejects boundaries –between academic pursuits, between science and arts, etc. • Rejects reasoned style for shock and startle style • Focus on the margins of life
Postmodernism • Myth of Liberation • Myth of Truth • Extreme theory base—not drawn from real experience just mind experience • The “end” of ? Thought process
Criticisms • Fails to live up to modern scientific standards of enquiry • Dogmatic • Actually does describe a grand narrative • Not a coherent set of ideas—not transcendant
Criticisms • Rejects sociological ideas such as macro theory, historical analysis, consensus theories that do have relevance to modern life • Cannot be disproved—not paradigms per se • Lack of clear concepts—only has meaning in its “anti” status
Criticisms • It’s discourses are really grand theories • Discourse is not an organizing principle for social interaction • Too agency based—society is not organized • Critique without effort to correct and teach, to solve the critical problem presented
Criticisms • Very subjective, narrative based but does not have a theory of agency and structure • Anti-feminist, Anti-ethnic
Ideas are “Free” • Complete freedom of idea from paradigm structure • Individuality to logical (?) conclusion • Margins are not representative of the social forces that control social action and reaction—eliminates the political and economic
