Progress Update Quantifying the diabatic sources of PV anomalies Recent work: MetUM case study analysis with PV source/sink tracers (1 paper to be submitted to QJ, 1 in prep) • PV tripoles • Associated with warming/cooling dipoles across fronts • Due mainly to microphysical processes • Generation strongly regulated by the ambient relative vorticity Plans: Continued case study analysis + idealised experiments to examine origin, evolution, and consequences of PV tripoles and midlevel PV “strips” (or “banners”)
