  2. Description • Created by the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act of 1935 • Purpose was to alleviate unemployment • Targeted unskilled workers • Most ambitious New Deal agency • Tried to provide one paid job for all families in which the breadwinner suffered long-term unemployment

  3. Role of Government • One of the strongest examples of deficit spending • Change of government policy from previous presidencies • Increased government spending • Cost $13.4 billion over 8 years • Increased government role in people’s lives as many people now worked for the government

  4. Effectiveness • The WPA was the most effective government agency • Positively affected the most people • Restored confidence in government • People were not alone

  5. Built and renovated almost 3000 fire stations • 20000 miles of water pipelines • Provided first relatively equal opportunity for African-Americans
