Summary • N’Deye Touti wanted Bakayoko to marry her, even though he already have a wife, but Bakayoko refused. • Fa Keita was tortured by the commandant, Bernadini, but didn’t say anything before he was freed. • The strike continues. Isnard’s wife, Beatrice was shot and killed after she assaults the strikers. • A woman begins to sing after Beatrice’s body is dragged inside the house.
The strike • In 1947, Senegalese railway workers started to demand equal pay (French workers are receiving a higher pay) • This angers the French authority. • Not only docked pay, but also docked and removed water access from the strikers. Also recommend traders to not sell food the strikers. • The strikers, in response, adapted by bush hunting. • Women plays an important role.
Outcome of the strike • The Dakar – Niger Railroad strike is successful. • Became the symbol of liberation in Senegal
The strike and women • With the sole source of money loss, the strikers have to rely of women for strength • The mobilization of women was one of the main reasons why the strike is successful.

Vocab Continued... • Promenade: Noun- A leisurely walk, especially one taken in a public place as a social activity. “It was the periodic ‘promenade’ organized by..” pg. 233 Sentence: After eating at Oliver Garden, my girlfriend and I promenaded through the park and watched the sunset by the lake. • Cohort: Noun- A group or band of people. “..the cohort of beggars, thinner than before, waited for the daily..” pg. 243 Sentence: After school, there is always a cohort of students hanging out in front of the school.
