Who’s responsible if an accident occurs? • You are a department chair – You come to campus at 7pm and you see 5 individuals roller bladeing on the tennis courts. Signs are posted prohibiting roller bladeing. What do you do? Are you responsible if an accident occurs.
You have a student present ice skating in your PE class. Someone gets injured. Is anyone in trouble? • Racquetball class is required to wear eye protection. You notice a student not wearing the goggles, three minutes later this student gets struck in the eye with a ball and suffers permanent damage. • Swimming class – You are teaching class and you receive a very important phone call. You tell your best swimmer to watch the class for a few minutes while you take the call. When you return half the class has drowned. Who’s in trouble?
The teacher leaves the classroom with two unruly students. You escort them to the principle’s office. When you return the remaining class has build a pyramid and one student has fall from the top and has suffered head trauma. Who’s in trouble? • While running a required mile an out of shape student complains of SOB and chest pain. You instruct the kid to continue because they only have 1 lap left. The kid collapses and dies of a heart attack. Who’s in trouble? • A gym participant accidentally runs into a barbell that’s placed on a bench near them. Participants suffers soft tissue damage – Who’s at fault? • Accident forms
Weight room design • Refer to you book (Chapt. 21) • Have all power equipment away from entrances/exits, mirrors and make sure this area can be viewed from a supervisors station. Make sure you have the correct type of floor. • Place tall pieces of equipment along the wall and make certain they are secure. • Make certain electrical cords are properly displayed. • Make sure you have enough room for stretches and exercises (general rule is 7ft x 7ft)
