  1. Pre-AP 6th Grade MathRockwall ISD Information for parents

Rockwall ISD and Pre-AP • Our district is committed to provide access to as many students as possible to pre-AP and AP Courses • In order to be prepared for AP Math, students need to experience the rigor of pre-AP courses throughout their high school years. • Four years ago, the district trained all the 6th grade math teachers in pre-AP strategies through the College Board Summer Institutes, and began offering the option of pre-AP math to 6th graders.

  3. 5th Grade Parents have a decision to make • To enroll their student in pre-AP math 6th • To enroll their student in 6th grade math

  4. What’s the difference? • Pre-AP 6th grade students primarily learn 7th grade content. The same concepts are taught in both 6th and 7th grade(with a few exceptions) but pre-AP students are exposed to a higher level of thinking, especially in their problem solving work. • Students who enroll in pre-AP 6th and pre-AP 7th learn content in two years(6-7) as opposed to three(6-7-8) and earn the opportunity to take Algebra in 8th grade. • Algebra readiness requires fact and fraction fluency, and a solid understanding of some aspects of measurement and geometry.

  5. The grading scale for all Pre-AP courses is: • 30% daily / class work • 70% test grades

Successful completion of Algebra in 8th grade has the following benefits for students • Students earn High School Math Credit in middle school. • Algebra I knowledge affects attainment of material taught in 4 other courses including Geometry, Algebra II, Chemistry and Physics. • Students will have one EOC out of the way before they begin high school. • Students will be well prepared for their SAT and ACT exams. • The AVID program and the National Math & Science Initiative encourage successful completion of Algebra in 8th grade because they want students to take AP Calculus in high school. College completion is tied to the highest level of math attained in high school.

  7. Looking Beyond Grade 6 Grade 6: Pre-AP Grade 6 Grade 7: Pre-AP Grade 7 Grade 8: Pre-AP Algebra I Grade 9: Pre-AP Geometry Grade 10: Pre-AP Algebra II Grade 11: Pre-AP Pre-Calculus and/or AP Statistics Grade 12: AP Calculus and/or AP Statistics

Who Should Take Pre-AP Math 6? • Students who are willing to make a commitment to the program • Students who can deal with low grades at times when they are learning difficult material • Students who persist • Students who are willing to do more of the work outside of school on their own • Students who have an interest in mathematics • Students who have solid fact fluency and conceptual understanding of all operations + - ÷ × (This is critical!) They also need to maintain their skills over the summer.

  9. Teachers can guide • Check with your child’s teacher for more help with your decision • Have your student talk to older students who have enjoyed the experience of AP Math • Keep in mind that even if math is a struggle, or your student processes slower, they can still be successful in the program. They just might have lower grades. The most important decision is the commitment.

AP High School Math Courses Offered in Rockwall • AP Calculus AB - one semester of College Calculus • AP Calculus BC - two semesters of College Calculus • AP Statistics - one semester of College Statistics Regardless of your decision, please allow your student to make mistakes as they are learning and encourage them to learn from their mistakes. Sometimes the greatest learning comes in the form of corrected work and students have to make corrections a habit.
