2. Early life • George Orwell was born in India 1903, with the name Eric Arthur Blair. But moved to England before he was one year old because his father retired from being in the English civil service in India at that time. • He went to many different schools but did not get on with many of the teachers or other boys. • Although he was still awarded a scholarship and went to the college of Eden. He learnt many things their such as shooting and manners.

3. Burmese police • At the age of 19 Eric Blair joined the Burmese military police back in India. • During this time He wrote his first novel ‘Burmese life’. • He was away from Europe for 5 years, when he came back it was not doing so well as there were lots of unemployment etc.. • He quit the Burmese police and focused on writing.

4. Back in Europe • He was taken to hospital and was diagnosed with lung disease and other illnesses. He left the hospital after a few years. • By this time he was completely broke so he did dishwashing, then began tramping. • He wrote another book but it was to grim to be published.

5. Teaching • He changed his name to George Orwell after the river Orwell and and became a respected teacher. • He fell in Love but could not get married because he was too poor. He got a loan for £500 if he write a book about the 3 million unemployed people in Britain. • He did so and got married and moved to a small house in the countryside.

6. The war • Many years later he moved to Barcelona to fight against fascism. • After four months in Spain he got shot in the neck but was not seriously injured.

7. Back in England • He went back to England and joined the BBC, his job was to write columns on many things from bombing to the life of rose bushes. During this time he was at work on ‘Animal farm’. • In June 1944 George and his wife adopted a baby boy called Richard as they were unable to have children. • He then became a war correspondent for the weekly observer newspaper. • Everything in his life was going well, until George Orwell fell seriously ill, and found out that his wife had died.

8. Animal Farm • Animal farm was published and was selling really well so he hired a house keeper to look after Richard and moved to a small island off Scotland. • The war ended, Russia and Stalin showed what they are really like.

9. Death • He got more and more ill in Scotland. • Over the next two years he wrote ‘1984’. • He nearly drowned trying to swim over this part of sea near his house as he couldn't resist. • ‘1984’ was a great success and made him a lot of money. • But he was always in hospitals. He got remarried and made plans to go to Switzerland. • But on the 21st June 1950 George Orwell died.
