  2. Nouns Overview A NOUN is a person, a place, a thing, or an idea. Nouns are classified as: • Singular or Plural • Common or Proper • Concrete or Abstract

  3. Singular Nouns A SINGULAR noun is a SINGLE (one) person, place, thing, or idea. - His aunt is ill. - The library is open. - Our team lost. - All hope is lost.

  4. Plural Nouns PLURAL nouns are MULTIPLE (more than one) people, places, things, or ideas. - Our teachers left. - The states are united. - The kittens slept there. - Our freedoms help us.

  5. Singular & Plural Review Write the noun in each sentence. Classify each as SINGULAR (S) or PLURAL (P). • A leaf drifted silently down. • My older sister is so silly. • I desperately need new shoes. • The four children were lost. • These blue pants are too short.

  6. Common Nouns A COMMON noun names a COMMON (not specific) person, place, thing, or idea. - A girl leaped over a log. - The school is closed. - A blue truck sped away. - I live in a state.

  7. Proper Nouns A PROPER noun names a SPECIFIC person, place, thing, or idea. A PROPER noun is ALWAYS capitalized. - Susie leaped over a log. - A blue Ford sped away. - Council is closed. - I live in Alabama.

  8. Common & Proper Review Write the noun in each sentence. Classify each as COMMON (C) or PROPER (P). 6. Our tomato soup was cold. 7. I’m going skating with Jennifer. 8. We need more Germ-X. 9. Let’s go to Six Flags today. 10. My felt pen won’t work.

  9. Concrete Nouns • A CONCRETE noun is a noun that can be observed with some or all of the 5 senses. - It can be: seen, heard, smelled, tasted, and/or felt. - It is an object that can be held in your hand or touched with your finger.

  10. Abstract Nouns • An ABSTRACT noun is a noun that cannot be observed with any of the 5 senses, and it cannot be held or touched. • Any noun that is NOT concrete is abstract!

  11. Concrete & Abstract Review Write the noun in each sentence. Classify each as CONCRETE (C) or ABSTRACT (A). 11. Jim’s hat was blue and gold. 12. My new MP3 player is lost. 13. We can feel the excitement. 14. Her wish might come true. 15. The stapler broke today.
