Nick Dupree and His Crusade • Aging out of Medicaid—16 hours of care to 2 hours under the adult program • Nursing home—closest one that could provide his needed level of care: 195 miles away in LA • Challenged by his grandmother, Nick began a two year campaign • Wrote letters, raised public awareness of the situation • Worked with state senator to develop and introduce legislation to eliminate age limit on services • When bill defeated, he filed a lawsuit in federal court • His efforts caught the attention of the folks at AIMM who along with their friends, families and allies, wrote hundreds of letters to President Bush, urging him to take action
Nick: The Rest of the Story • Days before his 21st birthday, Medicaid waiver program for 30 Alabamians approved • “I want people to think about the larger problem here. I plan to keep working on this for the rest of my life so that everyone can be safe and can be included in the community—and not locked in a faraway nursing home awaiting their death. • http://nickscrusade.com/
