  1. Translations (Day 1) We are learning to…identify and translate images on a coordinate plane. Friday, June 6, 2014

  2. Translations • A translation slides a figure to location. • The image is congruent to the original to the original figure. • The final image will never be flipped (reflected) or turned (rotated)

  3. Translation Notation: (for a coordinate plane) • x + #…means:to move an object to the right on the coordinate plane • this is because the larger values on the x-axis are to the right on the coordinate plane. • x – #…means:to move an object to the left on the coordinate plane • this is because the smaller values on the x-axis are to the left on the coordinate plane. • y + #…means:to move an object upwards on the coordinate plane • this is because the larger values on the y-axis are toward the top of the coordinate plane. • y – #…means:to move an object downwards on the coordinate plane • this is because the smaller values on the y-axis are toward the bottom of the coordinate plane.

  4. Explain how to translate an image with the following directions: Slide the figure 4 units right, and 2 units up. Slide the figure 6 units left, and 15 units up. Slide the figure 12 units right, and 5 units down. Slide the figure 8 units left, and 10 units down.

  5. Write the following in translation notation: x + 4, y + 5 x - 9, y + 6 x - 10, y - 13 x + 2, y - 3

  6. Translate the figure using the following directions: (x + 3, y – 7). This means to slide the image 3 units to the right, and then 7 units down. Find the coordinates of the translated image: A′:___________________ B′:___________________ C′:___________________ D′:___________________ B (-4, -4) C A (1, 1) B ′ D C ′ (6, -1) A′ D ′ (5, -6)

  7. Translate the figure using the following directions: (x – 5, y + 6). This means to slide the image 5 units to the left, and then 6 units up. Find the coordinates of the translated image: A′:___________________ B′:___________________ C′:___________________ (0, -3) C ′ B ′ (-4, 4) C B (4, 5) A ′ A

  8. Group Practice • First, discuss and record the differences and at least one similarity between rotations, reflections and translations. • Complete the 2 translations on the next page.
