Update on Networking Research @OARnet/ITEC-OhioPrasad Calyam, OARnetOARTech Presentation, June 8th, 2005
R&D Projects at OARnet • Broad areas of Research • Open-source Network Measurement Tools Software Development • H.323 Beacon, ActiveMon • Voice and Video Traffic over IP (VVoIP) Studies • Characterization and Modeling • Analysis of High-speed Interactive Audiovisual Streams • Network Measurement Infrastructure Testbed Development and Maintenance • Third Frontier Network Beacon Infrastructure • Active and Passive Measurements Analysis using advanced network data mining techniques • Characterization of Bulk File Transfer Performance over the Internet • High-performance TCP stacks testing with application and network parameters tuning
Network measurement tools software development • H.323 Beacon • H.323 Beacon is a tool that can be used to measure, monitor and qualify the performance of an H.323 Videoconference session. • Provides H.323-protocol specific evidence and other information necessary to troubleshoot Voice and Video over IP (VVoIP) application performance problems in the network and at the host (end-to-end). • The tool is open-source and can run on both Windows and Linux platforms • Being used in many communities including the Internet2 Commons and the Megaconference communities • Recommended in whitepapers by Polycom and Apparent Networks • Visual Networks Inc. working on a open-source alternate distribution!

ActiveMonhttp://www.itecohio.org/activemon • ActiveMon is an extensible and customizable software framework for generation and analysis of active measurements that can be used for routine network health monitoring. • Framework Features: • An application-specific performance measurement toolkit to measure network health metrics such as: route changes, delay, jitter, loss, bandwidth and MOS • Scalable scheduler “OnTimeMeasure” • Schedules both on-demand and regularly scheduled measurements • Regulates amount of active measurements traffic injected into a network • Ensures mutual-exclusion of simultaneous high-impact measurements • Optimized database schema to efficiently store massive amounts of measurement data • Central data collection and visualization package with easily customizable tabular and network health weather map interfaces • Anomaly-alarm notification via email - based on advanced statistical analyses that provides relevant evidence and ensures minimum false-alarms • Security settings to avoid compromise of measurement infrastructure resources • Planning for deploying at core-points of TFN!

Voice and Video Traffic over IP (VVoIP) Studies • Characterization and Modeling • Study of impact of various audio and video end-point codecs, packet size distributions, network jitter, lost and re-ordered packets on the end-user perception of audiovisual quality • Modeling effects of human, device and network factors in a VVoIP System – plans to develop “E-Model XT” • Understanding VVoIP behavior at high-speeds (E.g. MPEG, IPTV) End-to-End Model View of VVoIP System VVoIP study Testbed Spanning 14 countries Video Packetsize Distribution Video Jitter Distribution Network Delay Performance Bounds
Third Frontier Network BeaconInfrastructure (TBI) Testbedhttp://tfn.oar.net/measurement • TFN Beacon Infrastructure testbed • Techniques to collect performance measurement data to empirically correlate network events while monitoring TFN • Advanced data mining techniques on measurement data to analyze long-term end-to-end network performance trends Testbed spanning Campus, Regional and National Network Backbone paths Long-term Round-trip Delays Visualization Bandwidth Misconfiguration Anomaly
Bulk FTP performance testing • To understand limiting factors that hinder large-scale data transfers over the Internet • Automated scripts to perform bulk FTP tests: • Using multiple TCP Window Sizes (RTT*BW± β), • Specialized TCP stacks (Reno, Fast TCP, HS TCP, BIC TCP) • Various popular Bulk FTP applications (FTP, SCP, BBFTP, Iperf) • Effects of single and parallel TCP streams Comparing High-performance TCP Stacks Disaster Recovery Project Testbed Analyzing Bulk FTP application performance by Tuning Application and Network Parameters
