  3. Norway - Facts Statistics: • Length 1750 km • 7th largest in Europe • 4,8 mill. inhabitants • 19 Counties Largest cities: • Oslo (522 000) • Bergen (237 000) • Trondheim (154 000) • Stavanger (112 000)

  4. Language • Most Norwegians speak English • ….. But most of the employers require that you speak Norwegian, or a Scandinavian language • Ask your local Eures Adviser about language courses in your country • The Norwegian authorities do not offer EU/EEA citizens language courses free of charge

  5. Labour Market I • Numbers from February 2010 (February 2009): • Unemployment: 85 000 (67 500) – 3,3% • Vacancies: 21 000 (27 000) • Financial crisis • Increased unemployment? • Decreased investments? • Still hard to find skilled persons

  6. Labour Market II • Shortages: - Engineers • IT specialists • Health sector (doctors and specialised nurses) • Hotel and tourism (Seasonal - chefs and waiters) • Mechanical/ Ship Industry (skilled workers) • Pre-school teachers

  7. Labour Market III • Surpluses: • Consultants (economy/administration) • Educational sector (teachers) • Office workers • Sales and service staff • Construction industry (financial crisis) • Transport (financial crisis)

Labour marked IV • Offshore Industry: High competition for the job; highly skilled personnel with long experience only • Construction: Financial crisis but still possible to find a job; high qualifications + language skills • Hotel and Tourism: Good language skills; seasonal work • Transport: Valid certificate (the new EU Directive) • Fishing: Small demand in processing industry • Farming/ Agriculture: Skilled: Farm workers (Year round); Unskilled: Harvesting (Seasonal)
