Brew up a MAGICAL book club discussion with these potent ingredients!
MAGIC POWER:People Smart How does the author develop each of the characters in this chapter? Choose up to 3 passages where the author uses thoughts, actions, or other characters’ reactions to reveal a character’s personality.
MAGIC POWER:Picture Smart List examples of sensory details (sight, smell, taste, touch, sound) in the chapter. Illustrate a scene from the chapter using those specific details.
MAGIC POWER:Logic Smart Make connections while reading by listing similarities between events in the chapter and… …another text (book, movie, t.v. show, etc.) …your Personal experiences/schema …world events, cultural practices, and general common sense
MAGIC POWER:Music Smart Identify the main events of the chapter you just read. Then use known story elements (characters, setting, problem, etc.) to compose a song, rap, jingle or chant that summarizes these events.
MAGIC POWER:Self Smart Enrich your group’s experience by doing new research related to your book such as… …information about the author …information about the setting (geography, culture, climate, history) …artifacts(models, objects or pictures of objects) that relate to something in the chapter
MAGIC POWER:Body Smart Act out important dialogue from the chapter with good expression and phrasing. If little dialogue is used, CREATE IT by using what you know about the featured characters to write your own script.
MAGIC POWER:Nature Smart Generate a list of 3 to 5 open-ended questions about the chapter to ask your book club group at the next meeting. Questions that start with “HOW” or “WHY” are best—stay away from questions with only ONE right answer (especially YES or NO). Then select up to 3 parts of the chapter that were confusing or unclear to mention at your next meeting to better understand the author’s message.
MAGIC POWER:Word Smart Choose 3-5 rich, new words from your chapter. Use a dictionary to research the definition of each word. Then rewrite your definitions using language your group members will understand.
