What are fricatives? • Fricatives are made by partially blocking the airflow, thus causing the friction-like noise characteristic of these sounds. • 9 fricatives, largest set of consonants • /f, v//s, z/ /θ,ð//ʃ, ʒ/ /h/
What are affricates? • Affricates破擦音 • An affricate is a stop in which the articulating organs are separated more slowly than in the case of normal plosives. There is no noticeable explosion, but on the release of the stop a fricative consonant is heard.
Definition /t∫/ /dʒ/ /ts/ /dz/ /tr/ /dr/ Among the three pairs of affricates, /t∫, ts, tr / are voiceless.
/tʃ/ & /dʒ/ The stop is made by the front part of the tongue against teeth ridge and then the air is slowly released, and it escapes over the surface of the tongue.
