. Objectives:Be able to identify how ergonomics fits into a PI modelBe able to discuss ergonomics as a PI interventionBe able to apply several ergonomic concepts to the workplace. ERGONOMICS is systematically fitting the job to the person instead of the person to the job. Ergonomics.

15. Ergonomic Statistics: MSDs are the most prevalent, most expensive and most preventable workplace injuries in the country.
Work related MSDs account for more than 1/3 of all occupational injuries & illnesses that are serious enough to result in days away from work.
More than 600,000 employees suffer lost-workday MSDs each year.
16. Ergonomic Statistics: These injuries cost $15 - 45 billion in direct workers’ compensation costs each year.
Avg. cost per claim for upper extremity & lower back MSD is approx. twice that of the average workers’ comp. claim ($8,075 for upper extremity, $8,320 for lower back, compared to $4,075 for avg. non-MSD workers’ comp. claim.)
17. Non-Reporting of Injuries: Estimated as many as 50% of injured workers are not reporting their MSDs.
Fear of reprisal
Discouraged from reporting by supervisor
Discouraged by high rate of claim rejections for MSDs
Encouraged to use own health insurance rather than workers’ compensation insurance.
18. Increase in Claims in 80s & 90s: Growing workforce
An aging workforce
Recognition of new occupational diseases
Adjustments in benefits payments to account for prior benefits underpayment
Increases in litigation & medical costs related to workers’ comp. claims
Continuing existence of hazardous workplaces
Increases in the profits of workers’ comp. insurers
19. Value of Direct Cost Saving per MSD Averted: $14,763 Value of Lost Production
$ 3,080 Medical Costs
$ 1,872 Insurance Admin. Costs
$ 2,832 Indirect Costs to Employers
$22,546 Total Saved per MSD Averted
21. MSD Statistics: Now the leading cause of lost-workday injuries & workers’ comp. costs
Account for 34% of all lost-workday injuries and illnesses
Account for $1 of every $3 spent for workers’ comp.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) accounts for more days away from work (17 days for fractures, 20 for amputations & 25 for CTS)
They are preventable!
22. New Trends: Hardware & tool industry is beginning to develop products designed especially for women
Women purchase 40% of all do-it-yourself items
They initiate 80% of home projects
2/3 of women surveyed completed at least one project on their own.
23. American Express Financial Advisors (AEFA) developed program, over 4 years went from several thousand per claim to claims of several hundred dollars.
Employees went to 1 1/2 hour program on ergonomics, last 1/2 hr. they designed own workstation.
This workstation design was in a database and used anytime a move was made.
32. Ergonomics Exercises: 1. Analyze the computer set up. What’s wrong and how would you change it?
2. Analyze the learning environment (including tables, TV/VCR, chairs, etc.). What’s wrong and how would you change it?
3. Analyze the “paint line”. What's wrong and how would you change it?
33. Paint Line: Pre ergonomic Evaluation
34. Paint Line - Post Ergonomic Changes
35. Paint Gun Changes
