  1. Character First PERSUASIVENESS

  2. Character is the inward motivation to do what is rightin every situation even when no one is looking

  3. PERSUASIVENESS Guiding vital truths around another’s mental roadblocks.

  4. PERSUASIVENESS Persuasiveness is sharing truth in a way others can understand.

  5. PERSUASIVENESS Effective persuasiveness requires thorough consideration of all the factors involved in a matter.

  6. PERSUASIVENESS Persuasiveness explains the truth, but it cannot force others to embrace it.

  7. I Will: Point others in the Right Direction: • Persuasiveness is not convincing others to do things just any way, but to do things the right way.

  8. I Will: Not Stretch the Truth to Make it More Attractive: • Altering the truth to make it more attractive is not persuasion, but manipulation.

  9. I Will: Appeal to a Person’s Conscience in Terms of Character: • Instead of saying, “We should return the wallet,” persuasiveness says, “We should be truthful and return the wallet.”

  10. I Will: Wait for the Best Time: • By waiting for the best time to present an idea or ask a favor, you can avoid distractions that might hinder your appeals from being heard.

  11. I Will: Not Argue: • Proper persuasiveness uses calm and controlled words so as not to provoke others into an argument.

  12. Five Keys to Persuasiveness: • Set the Scene: Choose a time and setting when your audience is free to concentrate on what you have to say. • Present the Evidence: Give specific reasons and facts for what you believe. • Illustrate Your Point: Examples help connect ideas with real-life situations and give listeners something to remember. • Appeal to the Conscience: Appeal to a person’s sense of good and bad character.

  13. PERSUASIVENESS “The most important persuasion tool you have in your entire arsenal is integrity” Zig Ziglar

  14. PERSUASIVENESS “A companion's words of persuasion are effective” Homer

  15. PERSUASIVENESS “Persuasion is often more effectual than force” Aesop

  16. PERSUASIVENESS Ask Yourself: • When has someone talked you out of doing something wrong? What changed your mind? • What factors should you consider when choosing a time and place to discuss something important? • How can persuasiveness help you in the future?

  17. PERSUASIVENESS Example In Nature

  18. PERSUASIVENESS PEACOCK Peacocks have unusual voices. They squawk and screech at each other in loud, shrill tones. What sounds annoying to human ears is quite persuasive to a listening peahen.

  19. PERSUASIVENESS PEACOCK The peacock has a respectful attitude. He walks back and forth in a funny pattern. He bows to the peahen to persuade her to accept him.

  20. PERSUASIVENESS PEACOCK The peacock also persuades the female peahen by lifting his huge fan tail feathers. This helps to guide his peahen in the right direction.

  21. PERSUASIVENESS Example In History

  22. Patrick Henry At the age of 29, Henry was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses to help govern the colony. Patrick believed his colony needed to defend itself against the growing British military presence.

  23. Patrick Henry “Our chains are forged, their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable-and let it come! I repeat, let it come!” Patrick Henry presented the facts and eloquently appealed to his listeners.

  24. Patrick Henry Patrick Henry’s ability to be persuasive and speak the truth made him a leader in the movement that eventually secured America’s liberty and freedom.

  25. When Cultivating The Character Of Persuasiveness Remember To: • Treat others with respect, even if you disagree with them. • Give others sufficient time to think and reach a decision. • Do not pressure others into following your wishes. • Build integrity in your life so that others can trust what you say. • Check your attitude, tone of voice, and choice of words.
