Learning styles in experiential learning
Comic strip examples: What are the differences??
“Experience is not what happens to a man; it is what it does with what happens to him” Aldous Huxley
Learning from experience is an active event • Experience doesn’t always mean learning • There are personal differences in learning
We are going to focus on a model of experiential learning developed by R. Kolb. • There are other models that can also be of interest. • There are also other types of learning (emotional, learning to think, etc…)
Learning is a 4 step process… • CONCRETE EXPERIENCE (CE) • Involve oneself fully, openly • No bias in new experiences, no fear • Learning by sensing, feeling: intuition • Able and willing to learn • Age • Motivation
Learning is a 4 step process… • REFLECTIVE OBSERVATION (RO) • Reflect on and observe experiences • Many different perspectives • Learning by watching
Learning is a 4 step process… • ABSTRACT CONCEPTUALIZATION (AC) • Create concepts and generalizations • Integrate experience, reflections and observations • Make sense of them: personalize • Learning by thinking: build a plan
Learning is a 4 step process… • ACTIVE EXPERIMENTATION (AE) • Test implications of concepts in new situations • Use theories to make decisions and solve problems • Learning by doing
Learning is a 4 step process?? (AE) CAN BE THE SOURCE FOR ANOTHER (CE) THROUGH FEEDBACK. STUDIES SHOW THAT THIS FEEDBACK IS MORE EFFECTIVE THAN FEEDBACK FROM ANOTHER PERSON
Principles for effective learning • Recurring cycle: feedback • Process is directed by individual needs and goals • Learning styles are highly individual • Key to effective learning is using each mode when appropriate
Results of self-assessment test CE AE RO AC
Results of self-assessment test CE • DIVERGERS • Creative • Different perspectives • Brainstorming • artists RO
Results of self-assessment test RO • ASSIMILATORS • Academics • Theorists • Eggheads • Inductive reasoning AC
Results of self-assessment test AE • CONVERGERS • Unimaginative • Engineers • Applying ideas • Deductive reasoning AC
Results of self-assessment test AC • ACCOMODATORS • Carrying out plans and experiments • Trial and error • Practical, doing things • Nuts-and-bolts managers AE
Implications • Know yourself so that you can better take advantage of each situation • Remember that every learning style has its own strengths, but it also has weaknesses • When managing or training people, try to make use of all styles so that you provide opportunities for everybody
