You should aim to write 3-4 paragraphs, focusing on: • His behaviour • What the other characters think of him • What happens to him • How the audience – both then and now – feel about him Remember to include quotations in your answer. Draft it in your books then be prepared to write it up.

Evidence included in the second sentence Our first impressions of Malvolio are very bad. He insults Feste in front of Olivia by saying “I marvel that your ladyship takes delight in such a barren rascal.” This makes him seem malicious and rude; the audience feel this is a character they should dislike and mistrust. Perhaps Shakespeare wanted us to hate Malvolio here, so we wouldn’t pity him later but laugh at him instead.
