WG2: Joint operation of antennas and network data analysis • Mission: • to promote the planning and realization of joint observations and to discuss and study network data analysis methodologies and pipelines for gravitational wave searches among the European research groups. • Current international framework (unchanged since start): • many parallel bilateral activities, but still “closed”. Dissemination of information is not free: internal reviewing processes are to be satisfied and specific permissions are needed for talks and reports. GW data analysis is treated as “sensible” information the more you approach actual data sets. • a true multilateral European coordination of the efforts is not yet mature • Current pragmatic descoping (temporary): • support and the parallel bilateral activities between projects • stimulate discussions and the exchange of information among projects • motivate new multilateral agreements for joint observations and methodological R&D (based on science case)
WG2 recent activities (2005) • Most important added value: WG2 members actively contributed within parallel (separate) groups to • VIRGO & European resonant bars, start up and definition of the joint project • first joint observations during last commissioning runs of VIRGO • first sample raw data exchange • methodological R&D on real data sets in progress, aimed at transient signal search and stochastic background search • reports by Gianluca Guidi and Giancarlo Cella • IGEC-2 joint burst signal search among all resonant bars • long term time coincidence search in progress • validation of results by sample raw data exchange and cross check of data analysis pipelines • report by Massimo Visco
WG2 very recent activities (2005) • WG2 is trying an effective information exchange among parallel groups (from Sept. 2005). Discussion started on the progresses of some different parallel groups, to a deeper level compared to our conferences and workshops. • In addition to the projects cited before WG2 is discussing: • AURIGA-LIGO joint activity • to develop methodology and to prepare to future observations between interferometers and resonant detectors using real data sets (hybrid network). • report by Francesco Salemi • LIGO-VIRGO joint activity • currently uses simulated data • preparation for the future global network of interferometric detectors • report by Andrea Vicere` • methodological R&D • improve the confidence of a network detection: otpimization of network analysis, null-stream method • report by Ajith Parameswaran • science case for 2nd and 3rd generation antennas (ESF meeting Perugia)
WG2 composition and organization • we continued to extend the membership to additional researchers willing to push the European coordination. Currently 29 members representing the major groups/collaborations and bilateral activities. Co-Chairs: Bangalore S. Sathyprakash, Giovanni A. Prodi Members: Lucio Baggio*, Marie Anne Bizouard, Leone Bosi, Laura Brocco, Gian Carlo Cella, Sabrina D`Antonio, Sergio Frasca, Giorgio Frossati, Gianluca Guidi, Ik Siong Heng, Andrzej Krolak, Frederique Marion, Benoit Mours, Alicia Sintes Olives, Antonello Ortolan, Archana Pai, Maria Alessandra Papa, Ajith Parameswaran, Innocenzo Pinto, Tania Regimbau, Joseph D. Romano, Francesco Salemi, Alberto Vecchio, Andrea Vicerè, Massimo Visco, Arlette de Waard, Graham Woan * Fellowship funded by the network dedicated to network data analysis (VIRGO+bars) • many many meetings and telecons within cited parallel projects + • 2 plenary WG2 phone conferences • 1 face to face meeting • web-site dedicated to internal discussion and information exchange • electronic Bulletin Board at http://jwg.tn.infn.it .

WG2 organization • Giovanni A. Prodi will not be able to take care of the future chair duties of WG2 • (overcommitted), though he will be glad to continue to participate to its mission as a member. WG2 miscellanea progresses • science case for GEO HF and Adv.VIRGO (Glasgow meeting) • discussion on tools to support the needed coordination of observation times of different detectors • discussion on monitor and comparison of detectors performances “on the fly” • discussion on the freedom of information exchange among different projects. Current propositions: • methodological work should have no policy restrictions • create a common data set available to compare and benchmark methodologies (non-simultaneous real data sets ?, simulated data sets) • The current policy of most collaborations is not yet allowing it outside the bilateral projects
